Seed Exchange Lots for 2009

Every effort is made to avoid spelling errors, species are listed under the name supplied by the contributor and thus vary as to classification system.  Not all hybrid names are registered or found in other reference works.
hp = hand pollinated seeds.  Seed lots not marked are hp.
op = open pollinated
cp = controlled pollination, which differs from "hp" in that the stigma is physically covered after pollination. This covering is meant to act as an extra protection against accidental contamination with unknown pollen.
cw = collected in the wild

Note:  Lots shown with a strikethrough seed description are SOLD OUT as of July 21, 2009.

glabrous, so it should be classified as a thick-indumented form of taliense. JN 1042 is also a thick-indumented form of taliense with a glabrous ovary & style. Both forms probably deserve specific status as a new taxon.

195. Swathmore 12505-511, P7 x R. decorum ssp. diaprepes RSF 1975/104
1. Always Admired = John Wister's cross of Scintillation x R. haematodes. Compact and hardy, it produces flowers in loose trusses of 13. Flowers are pink & yellow blend; thick, waxy texture; ruffled; with a calyx
2 Judy Spillane = Wister's cross of R. maximum x Dexter #201, believed by many (Mr. Willhite included) to be the same as Janet Blair. Big plant, big leaves, very tough and vigorous, flowers similar to Janet Blair, but 2 weeks later.
3 June Jubilee = Aromi cross. (R. prunifolium x R. serrulatum) x R. arborescens. Heavy bud set, white fragrant flowers.
4 Lemon Drop = Yellow flowered R. viscosum hybrid.
5 (Lady Decora x Dexter #201) = Sw.58-299C. Wister cross with large, heavy, deep green leaves with light tan indumentum. Pink flowers with deep cherry red blotch. Lady Decora (Lady Eleanor Cathcart x R. decorum) is a very late Dexter. It is hardier than the listed parentage would suggest, causing one to suspect that the "decorum" pollen was actually vernicosum or fortunei. Dexter #201 is likely the same as Janet Blair.
6 Maxhaem Salmon = Gable's R. maximum x R. haematodes. Low and wide grower, salmon pink flowers. Hardy.
7 Smoky Mountain = Haag cross, R. vernicosum x Hardy Giant (R. fortunei x R. fictolacteum).
8 Summer Eyelet = listed by some as a form of R. viscosum, by others as a cross of R. viscosum x R. arborescens. Heavy bloom, very fragrant, very long (5-6 weeks) bloom season.
9 Pennsylvania = very late, pink flowers, complex R. prunifolium hybrid.
10 Summer Jewell = Wister cross, (R. maximum x R. discolor) x R. discolor. Very late (July 1 in Mr. Willhite's garden), huge fragrant white flowers.
11 Swathmore 12505-5 = late blooming Dexter cross of R. discolor-griersonianum-fortunei in some combination; salmon pink blossoms with deep cherry red blotch. Used by Dr. Wister in his hybridizing, it produces later bloom and prominent  blotches in its offspring.

3 [(Hotei x R. decorum) x Hotei]. Seedling from an earlier exchange that is most likely really (Hotei x decorum ) op; as, Hotei can only be a female parent. Soft yellow with a slight fragrance and small calyx. Nothing spectacular as a plant except that when it was juvenile it would have long lasting red pigment in its new growth.
4 84-22 was a plant grown from a seed exchange contribution from Emil Bohnel. Started in 1984 the plant had yellow flowers but poor leaf retention so The Andersons discarded it. They regretted that decision later when seedlings from 84-22 crosses began blooming. 84-22 = Donna Hardgrove X [Golden Star x (Catalgla x R. wardii)]
5 [Arctic Gold x (Big Deal x 84-224)] = Excellent yellow. The Andersons made cross in 2000.
6 (MACH FS 08) = Massachusetts Chapter Flower Show 2008 new hybrid category entry of Robert Furman.
7 (Arctic Gold x Atascadero8) = good yellow with calyx by The Andersons
8 Atascadero = Frank Fujioka hybrid. The name “Atascadero” is not an officially registered name; it is a nickname.
The cross is Lem's Cameo x Lila Pedigo. Lila Pedigo = Odee Wright x Crest.
9 Furman's large Pink indumented = [(Tally Ho x R. yakushimanum) x (Noyo Chief x R. yakushimanum)] x Jean Marie de Montague

Jens Nielsen, SW China Expedition
535. Note from Mr. Jens Nielsen about his trip. (Not a lot Number; used for Internet formatting.)

There is no doubt that 2008 was a difficult year for Rhododendron seed collection in SW China which had a very, very wet year. As a result even by October the seed capsules were in large measure very green. In order to get seed from the most matured capsules, Mr. Nielsen had to check the development of the seed by breaking capsules open before collecting. Other people he spoke with, also found it quite difficult to find well matured seed in 2008. Due to the very wet conditions the roads were in such a state as to make it impossible for Mr. Nielsen to get to many places he wished to collect seed from. Consequently, the number of species collected was disappointing and frustrating to him, as he had expected to probably collect twice the number of species. Not only had the summer been wet, it was raining in October and after he came home and checked the weather, still a lot of rain, which is very unusual for that late in the season.

But some of the target plants like R. rox. cucullatum from the type location and R. amundsenianum were found. On a positive note the seed once cleaned after being dried slowly look like well-formed normal seed and he would expect good germination. It may be worth noting that some seed from immature capsules seem to have more erratic germination than normal.

536. R. amundsenianum Lapponica SS --- NEW to cultivation dwarf species and so far only known from this locality. In the photo semi mature leaves appear to have scale of two colors with some darker scales, on mature and dried leaves the scales are uni-coloured. Very little known, possibly related to R. nitidilum but seems quite different. S Sichuan 3950m.
photo @: http://www.rhododendron.dk/amundsenianum.html

537. R. bureavii aff. sp. nov? --- A rather strange species similar to bureaviodes with quite large leaves and petioles held vertical on current year's growth. Indumentum on petioles, shoots and upper surface of the leaves, giving the plants a slight orange glow, which doesn't show well in the pics due to rain. The under side of leaves have only very patchy and scattered indumentum, becoming nearly glabrous with time: but very glandular with tiny red glands. Plentiful and common in this location and elevation, it would be tempting to use the name pubicostatum but Mr. Nielsen doesn't feel that would be correct according to the description. More typical bureavii may occur higher on this mountain, but he can't say for sure and it is an area where only very little collection have been done. Horticulturally quite different from bureavii and without a name yet. S Sichuan 3800m.

538. R. concinnum ----- A few hairs on the petiole and almost no calyx in this collection from S Sichuan 3600m.

541. R. heliolepis var fumidum ---- The eastern and quite distinct type of heliolepis with broader leaves that have a brownish tinged S Sichuan 3800m.

542. R. hemitrichotum ---- Probably first collection of this narrow leaved racemosum relative for many years. Leaf underside pale and on some plants in this location the underside also pubescent as well, rather like mollicomum SW Sichuan 2800m.

543. R. irroratum ---- SW Sichuan 2800m.
photo @: http://www.rhododendron.dk/JN-2008/543.jpg

544. R. lacteum ---- Large leaves which seem typical of the eastern race of this species. S Sichuan 3900m.

548. R. roxieanum var cucullatum TYPE location. -- This is probably the first seed collection ever from the mountain where Handel-Mazzetti collected what became the type specimen in 1914. Broad leaved forms of roxieanum are very variable and plants on this location are different from the oblanceolate leaved form (globigerum) from Sichuan-Yunnan border and from recent introductions from Yunnan. This is probably the south eastern limit of this species. S Sichuan 3950m.

photo @: http://www.rhododendron.dk/JN-2008/549.jpg

550. R. souliei ---- There are some glands on the petiole which confirm this collection as souliei which was also found on the next mountain to the east (syn. cordatum) in 1913. Mr Nielson knows of no collection from this location and without seeing the flower colour souliei is difficult to separate from wardii which occurs to the west. But both usually flower as a young plant from seed. S Sichuan 3800m.
photo @: http://www.rhododendron.dk/souliei-JN-ARS550-09.html

551. R. sphaeroblastum var wumengense --- Some nice blue leaved forms here and also with quite a distinctive “skin” on the indumentum on the under side if the leaves. The name var. wumengense has been used for recent collection from this eastern part of the species, like this collection, though the description of the variety differs on some points. 1 Agaves need extremely sharp drainage as they will rot if too much moisture is present. The utahensis can probably handle cold to -20
°F (or lower) if kept dry. The parryi can probably take -10°F (or lower) if dry.
2 Small growing, compact plant again with a lovely 3 foot bloom stock with white flowers. This species can take temperatures below -20
°F, but I can't put a definite number on it.
3 This is a narrow endemic to the Kanab area of Utah. Beautiful plants up to 3-4 feet high with large 8 foot bloom stocks covered with white flowers. The leaves are a light blue colour, the only species with similar colour leaves are Yucca rostrata and Yucca ridgida. This species does not form a trunk and can take cold down to -20
°F or lower (based on the record low temps in Kanab itself).
