De accordeon werkt eigenlijk volgens hetzelfde principe als een mondharmonica waarbij door blaaslucht een zogenaamd tongetje in trilling wordt gebracht waardoor er een toon ontstaat.

The accordion actually works according to the same principle as a mouth organ / harmonica where a so-called tongue is vibrated by blowing air, creating a tone.
The longer the tongue the lower the tone and the shorter the tongue the higher the tone. Click for example

Bij een accordeon blazen we niet zelf de lucht langs de tongen, maar doen we dit door het heen en weer bewegen van de balg.

With an accordion, we do not blow the air along the tongues ourselves, but we do this by moving the accordion bellows back and forth.

In plaats van één rij tongen heeft de accordeon afhankelijk van de uitvoering twee, drie, vier of zelfs vijf verschillende tongenblokken die ten aanzien van elkaar allemaal iets anders gestemd staan.
Dit levert het authentieke accordeon geluid op zoals wij dit kennen.

Instead of one row of tongues, the accordion has two, three, four or even five different blocks of tongues that are tuned differently to each other, depending on the version.
This produces the authentic accordion sound as we know it.

Tongenblokken/ Blocks of tongues

Het aan en uit schakelen van verschillende tongenblokken wordt gedaan met schakelaars op de accordeon die registers worden genoemd.

De tongenblokken kunnen op verschillende octaaf toonhoogten gestemd staan wat wordt aangeduid in de maatvoering 16 voet 8 voet en 4 voet, welke allemaal een octaaf toonhoogte verschil oplevert.

Op de accordeon wordt door middel van de rechterhand de melodie gespeeld en met de linkerhand de bassen en akkoorden.
De melodiekant kan zijn uitgevoerd met toetsen, de z.g. klavieraccordeons of met knopjes de z.g. knopaccordeons.

On the accordion the melody is played by the right hand and the basses and chords with the left hand.
The melody side can be performed with keys, the so-called keyboard accordions or with buttons the so-called button accordions.

De accordeon is te verkrijgen in verschillende grote die bij accordeons worden aangeduid door de aantal bassen.
