1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 429 Super Cobra Jet 4-Speed

This 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 was built at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan, assembly plant on September 18, 1970, and was initially delivered to John Bearce Ford of Washington, Illinois. It is finished in Light Pewter Metallic over black and powered by a 429ci Super Cobra Jet V8 paired with a four-speed close-ratio manual transmission and a 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential. Features include the Drag Pack option, power steering, power front disc brakes, black Mach 1 graphics, dual hood scoops, and a push-button AM radio. The car was acquired by the owner in 2018 and subsequent work consisted of an engine tune-up, replacing the fan belts, and installing a period-correct carburetor and fuel filter as well as an oil change. This Mustang Mach 1 is offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a reproduction window sticker, Deluxe Marti Report, reproduction dealer invoice, manufacturer’s literature, reproduction bill of sale, and a clean Nevada title.

The Sportsroof body is said to have been refinished in the factory Light Pewter Metallic during previous ownership. Features include a black trunk lid spoiler, rear lower valance, chin spoiler, Mach 1 graphics, Dual Ram Induction hood, and dual exhaust outlets that exit below the rear fascia. The seller notes that the driver-side rear quarter panel was repaired during previous ownership.

Steel 15″ wheels wear polished hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with F60-15 Firestone Wide Oval white-letter tires. A space-saver spare is mounted in the trunk. The car is equipped with power steering and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench seat trimmed in black vinyl with pewter inserts joined by a matching dashboard and door panels. Features include a Hurst T-handle shifter, heater, defroster, faux wood trim accents, polished door sills, black Mustang-branded rubber floor mats, and a push-button AM radio.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, tachometer, and fuel level gauge. A trio of auxiliary gauges is mounted in the center stack. The five-digit mechanical odometer indicates 55k miles, a handful of which have been added by the owner. The seller notes that the horn button is difficult to press.

The J-code 429ci Super Cobra Jet V8 breathes through a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 375 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The fan belts, carburetor, and fuel filter were replaced and an engine tune-up is said to have been performed in 2022.

The engine stamping 112121 matches the last six digits of the VIN shown on the chassis plate mounted to the dashboard.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed close-ratio manual transmission and a 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential.

The Deluxe Marti report details the original colors and equipment and lists a September 18, 1970 build date. A window sticker copy, original purchase documents, manufacturer’s literature, and reproduction dealer invoice are included in the sale.
