Lot #876

This 1972 BMW 2002tii is a numbers-matching, small-bumper roundie that looks sharp following a documented 2014 refurbishment which included new paint, updated cooling parts, gaskets, and Kugelfischer mechanical injection service. Having spent most of its life in the Bay Area, it was owned by the president of the local BMW club, followed by the manager of a BMW dealership. Independent suspension combined with the tii motor and a 2,200lb curb weight make for a lively driving experience, and the car is offered with documentation for work performed and a clean Florida title.

The body is very straight thanks in part to a 2014 freshening that saw corroded fenders replaced (original fenders included), followed by a windows- and rubber- out repaint in the original Polaris Silver – a bill for $11,500 is included. The car is distinguished by Motorsport-colored pinstriping, 13×5.5 basketweaves, and Hella driving lights.

Glass and brightwork look good all around, with slight waviness to the aluminum beltline trim in places. More photos are in the gallery below.

Inside, a Nardi wheel and original-style “salt and pepper” carpet are joined by a clean headliner, the tii-specific clock, and a modern stereo head unit. The original seats are included in the sale along with more supportive blue cloth Recaros currently fitted.

The odometer shows 1,704 miles and has rolled over. Overall the cabin looks very nice with wear evident on the vinyl surfaces, a slightly cracked dash, and oxidized heater controls. Holes have been cut for speakers in the door panels, whose chromed trim is scratched and peeling.

The 2.0L injected overhead cam engine makes strong power with well-tuned Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. This one is free of mechanical issues according to the seller, and is mated to a stock four-speed manual transmission. Removed for top end and fuel system work in 2014, it was also resealed and received a new oil pump chain, clutch master cylinder and more. Work has been documented, with some receipts in the gallery below.

New cooling hoses have been installed and the radiator rebuilt. There is some debate on whether the “snorkel” tube on the radiator support was stock for some ’72 tii units, but the seller says there does not appear to be evidence of past front end repair. The car’s most recent service took place last week and consisted of front wheel bearing adjustment, drive belt adjustment, new oil filter gasket, new shifter bushings, and repair of a minor differential leak.

Underneath, chassis and pans appear free of major issues and a modern exhaust has been installed. The seller relates that the president of the Amelia Island Concours has personally extended an invitation for this car to be shown at the event.
