Tromsø, Norway

Tromsø is a small city located on Tromsøya Island in northern Norway, 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. It’s a popular visitor destination for water & mountain scenery, colorful wooden houses, northern lights viewing, and ‘midnight sun’. There’s some lovely running in Tromsø, taking advantage of the city’s spectacular geographic setting.

Our ‘runseeing’ tour is a great way to start, featuring Tromsø’s waterfront, key sights, & city view points. The paths around Prestvannet Lake are also lovely for running. One of the best places to run in Tromsø is along Kvaløyvegen to Folkeparken on the western side of the island, featuring gorgeous fjord views. Across the bridge on the mainland, hike/run the 1300 Sherpa Steps (or take the cable car) to the summit of Mt. Storsteinen, where there are additional scenic hilltop trails. We’ve also recommended a few select roads along other fjords in the area that make safe & scenic running.

Notes: Even though Tromsø’s weather is mild considering its latitude, it can be snowy and icy during the winter. Most runners come equipped with grippers. It’s also a unique experience to go for a ‘Midnight Sun’ run between the end of May and the end of July.
