Verbranden is used just like the English 'burn', so it can apply to almost everything (also sunburn).
Aanbranden is solely the burning of food when cooking.

@KelsiLynn: If i use 'branden' instead of either 'verbranden' or 'aanbranden', does it sound rather childish?

- English (UK)
@kyungmi: Branden is the action of burning: when the burning is happening you say 'branden'. 'De boom brandt.' This lays more emphasis on the fact that the burning is happening, whereas 'verbranden' lays more emphasis on the result of the burning, like that it's turned to ash. 'De boom brandt': the tree is on fire (laying emphasis on the fire). 'De boom verbrandt': the tree is burning (laying more emphasis on the tree becoming black and coaly).
'Verbranden' is the result of the burning, so when the burning has finished. 'De boom is verbrand.'
This is not the case with cooking: it's both 'aanbranden'. 'Mijn aardappels branden aan.' 'Mijn aardappels zijn aangebrand.'

@kyungmi: One thing to note is that when a Dutch person would want to say "The tree is burning"(="The tree is on fire") they would normally go with "The boom staat in brand". Simply "De/het ... brandt" seems mostly used with "licht", "Het licht brandt", meaning that the light is on.
