Description

Often found growing among moist rock outcrops, crevices, cliffs, and gravelly slopes, alum root thrives in difficult locations. It is generally associated with shady, moist locations, but it can grow in full to part sun with adequate moisture and good drainage. Alum root is perfect for a shady rock garden. This evergreen perennial wildflower in the saxifrage family can be highly variable, but most often has lobed, green leaves and an erect spike of dainty flower clusters up to 3′ tall. The small flowers can be pink, white, or greenish in color. The flowers are attractive to native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Alum root (Heuchera micrantha) seed packets contain approximately 100 seeds per packet.

Seed Germination Instructions

60 days cold-moist stratification. Sow outside in fall. Seeds need light to germinate, surface sow.

Sow seeds in pots or direct sow outside in fall with a light dusting of soil over the seeds and let nature do the stratification naturally outside if you have cold enough winters. If you live in an area with mild winters, you may need to provide the cold-moist stratification artificially. For more information please read through the information in our Seed Germination and Propagation Reference Guide.
