Here's a pretty spread of low maintenance in mixed cultivars at Ginter Botanic Garden in Richmond. Such patches require very little moisture except on the hottest of days and provide many nice cut flowers over the months. Every garden of any size should have a "poker patch" on ground not suited for other things and yet handy for gathering arrangements from time to time.

Liriope muscari 'Hawks Feather' (6/4)

Liriope muscari 'John Burch'
lc: Originally having a chartreuse central band on dark green, but often appearing all green in deep shade or from

'Silvery Sunproof' may be a rename of  Liriope exiliflora 'Ariaka-janshige' ('Ariake-janshiga') and the RHS list it as such. I think there are at least 2 clones under this name, the above likely being the  Liriope exiliflora 'Ariaka-janshige'. I cannot yet be sure the original, true 'Silver Sunproof' is the confused one.

'Silver Dragon'. This Japanese clone is notable for having a whiter look due to a larger chimera than most clones in this genus and Ophiopogon. It does not burn except in the hottest and dryest of conditions if given afternoon shade. Tucked around a tree or shrub it will find it's own comfort zone for both moisture and light. Being a non-clumper (as is the species), it spreads to form full and thick masses as no L. muscari could hope to do in less 20 years.

'Ruby Slippers' is occasionally dismissed as just red like L. cardinalis. It is in fact a much larger flower, easily taller than the species it times, and flowering from laterals. I think the color is different, being a more velvety red with some rose and violet notes mixed in. It blooms longer any wild form and is what I call a good "species replacement"; which I know is heresy to some wild plant lovers. Too bad. Manmade evolution rules and beauty trumps political correctness.

LYCHNIS CORONARIA

Lychnis coronaria 'Alba' in an informal setting near the herb garden at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia. Used in goodly numbers this old cultivar provides a unique and wonderful look. There are very few silver-foliage plants with abundant white flowers and this one of the very best choices for that effect. The secret is using many of them and not just a single plant or three like most borders. The eye will naturally follow the white and silver in whatever direction you wish. Even the bloom is over the foliage remains of interest. They can be cut back for a repeat show of smaller proportions.

MELINUS

Copyright 2000-2002.

Melinus nerviglumus 'Pink Crystals' is the most exciting grass I've seen in a long time. I knew it from photos and the occasional gaunt plant in gardens. It was not until this stunning mass planting at the Norfolk Botanical Garden that I appreciated it's potential and real excellence. The foliage clumps are so perfect and lush green. The crystaline inflorescences even bear the scrutiny of a 300mm macro lens and look even better for the intimate examination. On paper this plant is weaker and less grand than a purple or pink Pennisetum. In reality, they have a glint and finesse that is a level above.

This lesson is one that not all of us have learned well. Most small ornamental grasses and sedges need at least two or three dozen plants to be even bearable. Three or six or ten are not enough in open ground. They easily mistaken for random weeds. One in pot is fine but in garden beds go for the big quantity with a margin for losses. The brain and eye need the repetition of that many clonal blobs and the accumulated color saturation to reach the threshold of true beauty. This rule applies to many grasses in general and this dainty, glorious discovery in particular.

Another close-up is shown below

Melinus 'Savannah' above is one I saw at the Park Seed Trial Gardens and have not seen since. The foliage is more blue than 'Pink Crystals'.

MENTHA

While not all mints are always ornamental, it is usually ornamental horticulturists who end up caring for them. Thus a good knowledge of them is important. Those that are tending to be invasive, ratty, or weedy in appearance often make up for it by their charming fragrance that is always handy near the kitchen. One finds some cultivars here which are pleasing silver, gold mottled, and purplish. You can also contrast the light green with the very dark greens for good effect. In containers where their growth can be checked and their tops trimmed often, most of these cultivars can be quite pleasing for foliage alone. Some of the cultivars have very shower red stems which can be encouraged to show off by cutting back twice or so a year. If one fits an assortment of cultivars of various leaf colors together you do indeed have a nice ornamental planter.

MONARDA

The 1998 evaluation of Monarda at the Chicago Botanic Garden for powdery mildew resistance is a classic: http://www.chicagobotanic.org/downloads/planteval_notes/no12_monarda.pdf

NOMENCLATURE NOTE: While most of the cultivars were initially derived from M. didyma, some today have M. fistulosa or more rarely M. clinopodia in the parentage. These hybrids are precisely labeled as M. x media. Monarda citriodora may be an influence if the foliage is clearly lemon-scented. Since much of this hybridization only suspected and not confirmed, we have listed many cultivars directly under the genus name.
