Heuchera / Coral Bells

Heuchera ‘Pinot Gris’ (‘Gloire d’Orleans’ x ‘Caramel’) – This large leaved villosa-type features ginger ale coloured foliage with light silver highlights and a rosy-purple reverse – these age to a smokey-rose. The tiny cream blooms are borne on 18″ tall stalks in June and July. This cultivar occasionally scorches in hot afternoon sun. Grows about 10″ tall and 14″ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’ – This 1996 introduction from Terra Nova Nurseries remains a top seller to this day. The slightly ruffled foliage is a rich plum purple with faint silver veining – this colour holds up well in the shade and intensifies in cold weather. The tiny creamy-white flowers are borne on tall (26″) purple stems and attract hummingbirds. Grows 8-12″ tall. Zone 4.

Heuchera ‘Key Lime Pie’ (syn. ‘Dolce Key Lime Pie’) (‘Amber Waves’ x ‘Huntsman’) – The new growth of this compact Heuchera is chartreuse, maturing to a bright lime green. It is similar to ‘Lime Rickey’ but with flat instead of ruffled foliage and looks great when paired with red hook sedge (Uncinia). The light pink blooms are borne June-July. Grows 8″tall by 12-16″ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

Heuchera ‘Melting Fire’ (syn. ‘Kiecakrul’) – A seed-grown variety which is reliably evergreen here on the coast, making it a good choice for winter planters. The highly ruffled foliage is a deep maroon to reddish-purple, with new growth showing more red and it is not prone to fading in summer. Tiny white flowers are borne on dark 18″ tall stems from May to June. Hardy to zone 5.

Heuchera ‘Miracle’ – Another of the villosa-types bred by Thierry Delabroye of France, and a sister seedling to ‘Tiramisu’. New growth emerges a gold to bright lime, eventually developing reddish highlights and maturing to a brick red with a fine gold margin. Grows 10″ tall and 10 to 12″ wide, bearing pink flowers in midsummer. Hardy to zone 5.
