As the first jazz student to enroll in the dual degree program at NEC and Harvard, Malcolm Campbell ’11 received a high level of education in both music and science. He described his time at NEC as a “great experience, with great energy and great friends.”
When he began his graduate studies in neuroscience at Stanford, he brought his musical skills and connections with him; every other week, he escaped from his lab to perform. Music continues to be a great source of joy for Malcolm, and he credits his NEC education with helping him establish his musical network.
Now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard, Malcolm said his NEC experience prepared him for the academic world. “I used to struggle with performance anxiety, but the experience of performing at NEC has helped in academia when I’ve had to speak in front of big crowds,” he said.
Just a bus ride away from campus, Malcolm is still involved with NEC through NEC NOW, an inclusive community of vibrant young professionals dedicated to sharing NEC’s cultural and social impact throughout Boston. “I still feel the connection when I walk into Jordan Hall. NEC NOW is a great way to reconnect and contribute to the NEC community,” he said.
