With nearly 800 employees the Columbus Department of Public Service provides a variety of essential services that maintain and improve the traveling safety and quality of life for Columbus residents, as well as supports the growth and economic development of the city.

The Department of Public Service:

  • Maintains more than 5,000 lane miles of roadways, including 217 bridges, in the city of Columbus
  • Designs and constructs roadway improvements, including street resurfacing projects
  • Collects Refuse from more than 340,000 households every week
  • Through a contract with Rumpke, collects yard waste and residential recycling from more than 200,000 single-family households and eligible condominium and apartment complexes
  • During the winter, plows and treats city of Columbus streets (The Ohio Department of Transportation plows and treats I-70, I-71, I-670 and I-270)
  • Designs and builds or installs, when and where feasible, facilities to make Columbus a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city
  • Designs and constructs or installs traffic calming measures to make neighborhoods safer for pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Installs and maintains street signs and traffic signals
  • Oversees construction of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant wheelchair curb ramps
  • Manages and enforces on-street public parking, including parking meters and parking permit areas
  • Manages Keep Columbus Beautiful, which works with neighborhoods, faith based groups, businesses and other groups to conduct litter cleanups and promotes recycling and community beautification
