Geraniums A Go Go

You’ve just got to love geraniums.  I mean the proper herbaceous geraniums, not the showy pretenders so often called geraniums but which are in fact pelagoniums.  We must have 20 different species in the garden ranging from the delicate Geranium x antipodeum “Sea Spray” to the prolific conversation piece Geranium palmatum.  The plant above Geranium clarkei “Kashmir Purple”  is a strong contender for top ten, it flowers early and exuberantly and after a harsh chop a la Chelsea will return to flower, admittedly less vigorously, later in the season.   We find they are mainly very hardy and have very few pest and disease problems, the only one for us being a rather large one – the deer adore them, chomping foliage right down to the ground.  If only we could get them to do this straight after flowering it would save us a job.
