from Latin: semper/always and vivos/alive alludes to their tough nature. Commonly called ‘houseleeks’ from their ancient use as roof coverings as deterrent against lightning strikes. Strictly speaking, this refers to the wild variety S. tectorum (Latin ‘roof’).
