It’s hard enough to get your hands on one Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, let alone two. Now, for the first time ever, a pair of neighboring Usonian-style homes near Kalamazoo, Michigan, have hit the market for a combined $4.5 million.
Known as the Samuel and Dorothy Eppstein House and the Eric and Pat Pratt House, the mid-century residences are within The Acres, a 70-acre planned neighborhood designed by Wright using his naturalistic style. The entire development, the only one ever fully designed by Wright, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
The current owners, Marika Broere and Tony Hillebrandt, purchased the Eppstein House in 2016 and snapped up the Pratt House next door when it became available a few years later. The couple then embarked on a five-year restoration, making sure to keep the original footprints intact while bringing both dwellings into the 21st century.
Each of the homes measures around 2,200 square feet and features Wright’s signature built-in furnishings, mahogany paneling, and red concrete flooring. Of course, there’s now the benefit of updated appliances, as well as new plumbing and electricity.
Pratt House was built in 1951, and here you’ll find two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a library/music room, and an entertainment area spread across a single open floor plan. Adjoining the residence is a separate and sizable workshop that, according to marketing material, initially served as a pottery studio.
Separated by pastureland sits the circa 1953 Eppstein House. The three-bedroom home is fronted by a soaring 10-foot floor-to-ceiling glass façade, and there are three outdoor terraces that overlook the surrounding trees and meadows. The abode contains two living spaces, complete with fireplaces and period-appropriate artwork and books.
“From the organic integration of the houses with their surroundings to the innovative use of space, each house is both an architectural gem, a unique piece of artwork, and a comfortable space ready for new owners to create lasting memories,” writes the listing, which is held by Victoria Krause Schutte of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate and Fred Taber of Jaqua Realtors.
