Just as Eve did in the Garden of Eden, Pope Pope Benedict XVI has succumbed to the irresistible allure of an Apple.

But not one from a wicked-serpent, but one from Cupertino as the Sovereign Pontiff used an iPad to log on to Twitter and send his first ever tweet.

It read:

"Chk out this killer new vid from Lady Ga Ga. She's fkin mental! roflmao"

It didn't really, of course. It did, in fact, read:

"Dear Friends, I just launched News.Va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI"

News.Va is offers "an exclusive, multimedia presentation of all the other communications websites of the Holy See", including Vatican Radio, the newspaper l'Osservatore Romano and the Misna missionary news agency.

The new site has been launched in time for the feast day of St Peter and Paul - 29 June - the same day that Pope Pope Benedict XVI celebrates the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.
