“Hameln” Dwarf Fountain Grass is a compact variety of fountain grass. This ornamental grass is one of the best grasses for grouping or mass planting. It covers well, grows easily, and can be planted in areas that are difficult to reach with a mower or are trouble spots for trimming or prone to erosion, like on a hillside or around a fence base. Its thin, arching leaves spray out in all directions from the center mound, much like its name suggests. It is green all spring and summer, and in late summer through the fall season, silvery-pink tassels and soft, cream-colored plumes perch above its cascading leaves. In the fall, the leaves transform to a rich golden color, and the leaves play in the wind throughout the year, creating a delightful movement.

“Hameln” Dwarf Fountain Grass is low maintenance. It grows quickly and enjoys full sun. It grows in zones 5-9. It grows best in well-drained soils but adapts well to just about any soil type. It is also draught tolerant and even tolerates some salt. Because of its compact nature, it does well in containers or any garden setting, and it makes a wonderful filler around the front border of the garden or along a path or driveway and is deer and disease resistant.

This hardy little fountain grass is perennial, so it can be enjoyed year after year. In the winter, the leaves will turn a coppery tan and rustle in the breeze, so it is a wonderful year-round feature as well. Keep the grass untrimmed for interest in the winter garden, and trim it back when the green leaves begin appearing again in early spring. This compact fountain grass will bring gentle movement to any garden, and it will greatly reduce the need for routine trimming when placed around fencing and along paths.
