NL - Van Elks fascinatie voor het Hollandse landschap en de hedendaagse negatie van dit ooit bloeiende genre resulteerde in een reeks werken over het ongrijpbare fenomeen van de horizon. Je ziet hem duidelijk – op een afbeelding nog beter dan in werkelijkheid –, maar wat je ziet, is fictie, een zinsbegoocheling. Zijn studies van het Kinselmeer uit verschillende hoeken en bij telkens andere weersomstandigheden kennen een horizon die het werk doormidden deelt. Een effect dat nog versterkt wordt als hij onder- en bovenstuk draait ten opzichte van elkaar. Doordat Van Elk de met verf geretoucheerde foto's opnieuw fotografeert en als Cibachrome afdrukt, krijgt het traditionele landschap een uiterst modern, ‘plastic’ gezicht.

FR - La fascination de van Elk pour le paysage hollandais et la négation actuelle de ce genre autrefois florissant a débouché sur une série d’œuvres consacrées au phénomène insaisissable qu’est l’horizon. On le voit clairement – sur une représentation encore mieux que dans la réalité – mais ce que l’on voit est de la fiction, une illusion perceptive. Ses études du Kinselmeer vu sous différents angles et dans des conditions atmosphériques chaque fois différentes sont caractérisées par un horizon qui divise l’œuvre en deux. Un effet qui est encore renforcé par le retournement de la partie inférieure par rapport à la partie supérieure. Comme Van Elk re-photographie les photos qu’il a retouchées avec de la peinture et qu’il les imprime selon le procédé du Cibachrome, le paysage traditionnel revêt tout à coup une « plasticité » extrêmement moderne.

EN - Van Elk’s fascination with the Dutch landscape and the contemporary negation of this once flourishing genre resulted in a series of works on the elusive phenomenon of the horizon. You can see it clearly – in a picture even better than in reality – but what you see is a fiction, an illusion. His studies of the Kinselmeer [Lake Kinsel] from different perspectives and in different weather conditions are bisected by a horizon line. The effect is reinforced when he rotates the lower and upper parts in relation to each other. Because Van Elk re-photographs the photos, which have been retouched with paint, and prints them as Cibachromes, the traditional landscape acquires an extremely modern and ‘plastic’ appearance.
