Tokyo: Prada (Japan)

Prada Store

Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan

Herzog & de Meuron Architects (2000-03)

Prada Tokyo by Herzog & de Meuron 05

Herzog & de Meuron were already known for their inventive architectural designs when approached by Prada to design this new store in Tokyo. A completely stand-alone building is a bit of a rarity in this city but Herzog & de Meuron pushed all parameters to devise a tightly packed faceted block that would allow them to create a public ‘plaza’ in front.

Skinned with an angled steel structural frame with unique bubble windows, this facade of flat, concave and convex lenses allows a rather fishbowl-like view into and out of this special store, with the overall design totally befitting a certain science-fiction-like character we might associate with Japan.

The Prada shopping experience becomes a journey spiralling up through the building while also giving a wonderful continuos view out over the the surrounding buildings of Tokyo.
