The Black House (Knokke)

Belgium / West-Flandern / Knokke-Heist / Knokke / Avenue Dumortier / Dumortierlaan
house, modernism, listed building / architectural heritage, 1924_construction

By request of Doctor De Beir, the Brugge architect Huib Hoste built this unusual modernist house in 1924. The cubic shape, the striking colours contrasted with the surroundings. No bricks were used, only concrete and cinder blocks covered in tar, hence its name.

Although much of the original furniture created by artists of the time has disappeared, many fixed pieces were restored and supplemented with contemporary art by gallery owner Gerda Vander Kerken.
