Son auteur, Dominique Lampson (1532-1599) est une grande figure de l’humanisme liégeois. Après avoir été le secrétaire de Reginald Pole, il devint celui des Princes-Evêques. Chez Pole, il découvrit l’œuvre du peintre Lambert Lombard et il suivit son enseignement à Liège. Cet artiste est de nos jours peu connu en dehors de la Belgique. Biographie programmatique, c’est au peintre savant comme le fut Lombard, comme le seront son élève Otto Vaenius et l’élève de ce dernier, Rubens, que s’adresse ce petit ouvrage latin. La Vita fournit des éléments essentiels à notre connaissance des innovations que Lombard introduisit dans la peinture des Pays-Bas. Bien plus, elle propose une théorie cohérente de la peinture fondée dans la rhétorique. La Vita illustre ainsi la réception de l’Antiquité par les artistes dans ses deux aspects – les textes et les objets. Une introduction alerte et une traduction précise et élégante de Colette Nativel invitent à redécouvrir tant Lampson que Lombard. * Published in Bruges by Hubert Goltzius in 1565, the Lamberti Lombardi Vita is the first biography of an artist written in the North, some years after Vasari’s Vite (1550). Its author, Dominique Lampson (1532-1599), is a great figure of the humanist movement in Liège. After having been Reginald Pole’s secretary, he became that of the Princes-Bishops. It was in Pole’s service that he discovered the work of the painter Lambert Lombard and he studied under him in Liège. Lombard is nowadays little known outside of Belgium. As a programmatic biography, this little book in Latin is addressed to the learned painter that was Lombard, as will be his pupil Otto Vaenius and latter’s pupil, Rubens. The Vita provides elements essential to our understanding of the innovations that Lombard introduced into the painting of the Netherlands. What is more, it proposes a coherent theory of painting based upon the art of rhetoric. The Vita thus illustrates the reception of Antiquity by artists in both of its aspects: texts and artefacts.
