Summer phlox is a wonderfully sweet smelling plant that attracts not only people but many pollinators too. Many Butterflies, moths and other insects use this plant for nectar. Summer phlox is stunning in bloom. It is on of those plants that when people see it they say what is that. It flowers in NY starting in July and flowers for an extended period of time.

Summer phlox has been breed to produce many named horticultural varieties. The varieties 'David', 'Laura', Eva Cullum' ,'Laura', 'Blue Paradise' and 'Nicky"are all very beautiful. One of the problems associated with phlox is powdery mildew. This is a fungus that causes a gray coating on the leaves, 'David', 'Laura' are supposed to be powdery mildew resistant. We also grow open pollinated summer phlox. What will the flower color be? We will see when they flower. We call these no cultivar.

Summer phlox is an excellent garden plant. It also is a great cut flower. Summer Phlox goes in full sun or part-shade. The soil should be well drained but fertile.

Good companion are tall meadow rue, Joe-pye weed, black-eyed Susan, wild columbine, asters and ferns in shadier areas.
