Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' A grand, sculptural specimen tree with branches to the ground, the European beech has extremely muscular, smooth gray bark and exposed roots. Rigidly columnar to cone-shaped 'Dawyck Purple' bears dark-purple leaves and slightly inward-turning shoot tips. A beech should be planted with an eye to the future because its average growth rate is a very slow 9-12 feet every decade.
