Maiden Pink is a low-growing, evergreen flower that is perfect for sowing in rock gardens, as an edging, or between paving stones as a ground cover.
This variety of Dianthus is commonly called Maiden Pink. This perennial remains green year round with 1 inch fragrant blooms of pink and red hues. These blooms are concentrated at the top during its blooming season, from spring to summer. This is a mat-forming species with dark green leaves and is so rewarding to grow!
Maiden Pink flowers keep their beauty even during the hottest summer months. It is a liberal self-sower, dropping its own flower seeds, so it will fill in nicely, making it a great ground cover or border plant. The Maiden Pinks Dianthus is an easy-care perennial and is perfect for a beginning gardener. It is fantastic in mixed containers or tubs. They are great as a cut flower and are long-lasting in fresh bouquets!
It is best to plant the Dianthus in fertile, well lit, and fast draining soil. Once established, it is best to provide plants with low to moderate water. Maiden Pinks partially close their blooms at dusk, lending to the source of their common name.
Maiden Pink seeds take about 14 days to germinate. Sow the seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost, and transplant when plants are 3 inches high.
Or sow Dianthus flower seeds directly outside as soon as soil can be prepared and cover with 1/8 inch of topsoil. It might take a full year before they flower.
It is best to deadhead the flowers to prolong their flowering. Or you can shear after flowering for a neater aspect. The sowing rate is approximately 5,000 seeds covers 100 square feet.
The Maiden Pink Dianthus is native to Asia and Europe.
