About this item

  • Achillea tomentosa, or Yarrow, is a hardy perennial that is a favorite of many gardeners. This variety, Golden Fleece, is low-growing and loaded with golden flowers above silvery foliage. It grows easily from seed and has a long bloom season, late spring through summer.
  • Yarrow is a 6 - 8 inch tall perennial flowering plant growing in USDA zones 4 - 9. Yarrow makes a great cut flower, and it dries well for use in dried arrangements.
  • It is so low growing many home owners use it for a ground cover plant.
  • Sowing Rate: Approximately 500 seeds covers 10 square feet. Start Yarrow seed indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Press the seed into soil, do not cover it and keep the seed moist. With a temperature of 68F, germination is usually in 21 days. Grow Yarrow in full sun. It prefers well-drained soil, and it is usually deer resistant.
  • Space plants 12 inches apart. In areas with long growing season, Yarrow can be directly started outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Deadheading promotes continual bloom, and the clumps should be divided every 3 – 4 years to keep the plant healthy.

Yarrow (Achillea Tomentosa Aurea)

Grow Yarrow seeds to have this delightful variety known as Dwarf Yarrow or Woolly Yarrow. This wonderful plant has a silvery fern-like foliage and brilliant golden flowers when in blooms.

This dwarf Achillea plant is very attractive to bees and butterflies. It makes a wonderful cut flower and dries well too! Yarrow has very good drought tolerance and is adaptable to most soils. Fertilize sparingly as nitrogen rich soil will produce lush foliage production but less flowering.

Caring for your Yarrow includes deadheading any spent flowers, as this will help to promote more blooming. After flowering, cut back plants to leaves to tidy up and help encourage the possibility of additional fall blooming. Divide clumps every 3 - 4 years, when overcrowded. These yarrows propagate by cuttings, division, or seed.

How to Grow

Sow Yarrow seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before frost season ends. Use starter trays or small pots.

Press Woolly Yarrow seeds into the soil but do not cover. Light aids germination. Keep the ground cover seeds moist until germination.

Or, after frost danger has passed, directly sow Yarrow ground cover seeds outdoors in prepared soil. Thin the Yarrow seedlings to 12 inches apart.

Extremely disappointed. I babied these seeds for 3 weeks, following all planting instructions and keeping them moist. What did I get for my efforts? Zero. Nothing. Nada. Note that I didn't plant until 10 months after purchase because I wanted to plant in Spring. Still, I reached out twice to the seller, asking if I had waited too long, would they still germinate, and heard nothing back whatsoever. There's no expiration date on the packet so I assumed I had time. What a waste of time and effort...

For me most of my seeds germinated. I think what the problem was for many of the reviewers is that they covered the seeds. These seeds are meant to be broadcast planted (tossed over the soil) they should not be buried in the soil because sun is needed for these kinds of plants to germinate.
