Kirkus Reviews “Best YA Biography and Memoir of 2021” Selection

Rosa Parks is one of the most well-known Americans today, but much of what is known and taught about her is incomplete, distorted, and just plain wrong. Adapted for young people from the NAACP Image Award–winning
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks, Jeanne Theoharis and Brandy Colbert shatter the myths that Parks was meek, accidental, tired, or middle class. They reveal a lifelong freedom fighter whose activism began two decades before her historic stand that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott and continued for 40 years after. Readers will understand what it was like to be Parks, from standing up to white supremacist bullies as a young person to meeting her husband, Raymond, who showed her the possibility of collective activism, to her years of frustrated struggle before the boycott, to the decade of suffering that followed for her family after her bus arrest. The book follows Parks to Detroit, after her family was forced to leave Montgomery, Alabama, where she spent the second half of her life and reveals her activism alongside a growing Black Power movement and beyond.

Because Rosa Parks was active for 60 years, in the North as well as the South, her story provides a broader and more accurate view of the Black freedom struggle across the twentieth century. Theoharis and Colbert show young people how the national fable of Parks and the civil rights movement—celebrated in schools during Black History Month—has warped what we know about Parks and stripped away the power and substance of the movement.
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks illustrates how the movement radically sought to expose and eradicate racism in jobs, housing, schools, and public services, as well as police brutality and the over-incarceration of Black people—and how Rosa Parks was a key player throughout.

Rosa Parks placed her greatest hope in young people—in their vision, resolve, and boldness to take the struggle forward. As a young adult, she discovered Black history, and it sustained her across her life.
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks will help do that for a new generation.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-The name Rosa Parks conjures images of her most famous act of defiance: refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in Montgomery, AL. Readers will see a pattern of rebellion that started when Parks was a young girl and never really ended until her death in 2005. She fought for the rights of Black people, especially Black women, for over 60 years. Parks was one of the few women who held an office in the NAACP. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she attended the rallies of Malcolm X. The act of protest on the bus, which led to a 381-day bus boycott and the eventual desegregation of public transportation, is only one example of her activism. The full story is more traumatic and heartrending than the textbook portrayal of a tired seamstress who refused to give up her seat. Parks and her family endured criticism, threatening phone calls, and police brutality. After the bus incident, she and her husband were fired from their jobs, which led to their eventual move to Detroit. As much as some readers want to believe racism was exclusive to the Southern states, both Parks and her husband experienced bigotry during their time in Michigan. Parks was often overlooked as a leader during her own time because she was a Black woman. Theoharis and Colbert provide a thorough tome for those who truly want to understand Parks's life. The familiar version most people encounter does not paint an accurate picture of Park's hopes, dreams, struggles, heartbreaks, and successes. The writing style flows seamlessly, drawing readers into the narrative. The addition of journal entries in Park's own handwriting and photos lend to the authenticity of the stories. VERDICT Recommended for all middle grade and YA collections.-Jeni Tahaney, Summit H.S., Manfield, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Review

“A nuanced exploration of a woman with a lifelong commitment to social change.”
Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

“Exhaustively researched . . . . a powerful, eye-opening account and a valuable assessment of how historical events and figures can be manipulated, reduced, or embellished to serve the status quo. Neither teachers nor students could possibly expect more from a text.”
—Eleanor J. Bader,
The Progressive

“Assign this book in the high school curriculum. Organize a Black Lives Matter teen book club to discuss this book. Give this book as a gift to the young person in your life. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need the real story of Rosa Parks.”
—Melissa Harris-Perry

“A must-read for young people.”
—Bryan Stevenson, author of
Just Mercy

“To truly honor Mrs. Rosa Parks is to set the record straight. She was not an accidental heroine or just a tired old lady; she was a lifelong rebellious freedom fighter in every sense of the word. Theoharis has captured the beauty and complexity of Mrs. Parks’s life. Deeply researched and engaging, this rich chronicle of Mrs. Parks’s life is a page-turner for adults and youth alike. Theoharis and Colbert have told Mrs. Parks’s life with so much love, care, and truth telling. Bravo!”
—Bettina L. Love, author of
We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom

“Rosa Parks is one of the few people that young people often get to learn about from the civil rights movement—and yet the story they learn usually obscures the most valuable lessons of her life.
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks is the most effective tool I have ever used to deepen my students’ understanding of her life—the real Rosa Parks was a racial justice activist in the North and the South; an organizer against lynching and sexual assault; a mentor who empowered young people to become change makers. My students couldn’t put the book down because with every page they realized that the traditional story they had been taught about her life wasn’t true—and that the real story was so much more captivating, energizing, and instructive for how to challenge racial and social injustice. No secondary American history course is complete without this book.”
—Jesse Hagopian, high school Ethnic studies teacher and co-editor of
Black Lives Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice

“Mrs. Parks’s ‘rebellious’ life always challenged inequality and injustice, even before she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus in 1955. This revealing life story introduces readers to a woman whose courage and vision we can all emulate. Above all else, Mrs. Parks believed that young people would carry the civil rights movement forward, and Theoharis and Colbert show how to do just that through a thrillingly vivid account of how one woman learned to do her part to change the world.”
—Martha S. Jones, author of
Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All

“In a moving work that documents Rosa Parks’s misunderstood role within the civil rights movement, Theoharis and Colbert bring the fast moving dynamism of the movement’s history to life.
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks rescues Rosa Parks from the mythologies of civil rights lore by instead situating her within the long twentieth-century Black Freedom struggle, both North and South, as an activist and an organizer. Highly accessible and eminently readable, this book is retooling with the next generation of would-be activists with the politics and history that can help them forge new paths in the ongoing struggle to make Black lives matter.”
—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, author of
From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation

“Finally, a book about the real Rosa Parks—the Rosa Parks who was a lifelong activist, a tireless organizer, and who did so much more than refuse to give up her seat on that bus in Montgomery, Alabama. In story after story, Jeanne Theoharis and Brandy Colbert breathe life into the rebellious Mrs. Rosa Parks, a fighter for justice who will intrigue and inspire young people. And for all of us who want to teach honestly about Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement, this is an essential resource.”
—Bill Bigelow, curriculum editor,
Rethinking Schools, and co-director, Zinn Education Project

The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks offers young readers a detailed exploration of an iconic freedom fighter. In clear and moving prose, Theoharis and Colbert reintroduce a woman who spent the majority of her life fighting on behalf of Black people and women. Young readers will learn that while Rosa Parks is most widely known for her courage connected to the Montgomery bus boycott, her story really represents a lifetime of fierce commitment to social justice.”
—Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of
Never Caught: The Story of Ona Judge

The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks - YRE was brilliantly done. Theoharis did a masterful job of presenting the life story and works of this Civil Rights icon. I loved how she revealed Parks as a lioness who roared through her activism. She showed readers that there was more to Rosa's story than what is typically portrayed in the annals of history. I appreciated how she uncovered Rosa's personal fight for justice, equality, and equity and how she proclaimed Rosa as an ally for those who were wronged due to racial discrimination, abuses, harassment, and oppression.

As a parent and as an educator, I highly recommend this book. Every student in this country should be exposed to its content. There is so much that remains untold and unknown about Mrs. Rosa Parks and about those who came before her and alongside her. This book fills in some of the gaps. It is a valuable tool and a rich resource that deserves to be acknowledged and utilized. Lastly, as an African American woman, I applaud this work that unapologetically recognizes black excellence, female strength and tenacity, and human grit in the face of adversity.

This book is a winner! I learned so much about Mrs. Rosa Parks. The author shows how Mrs. Parks was a multi dimensional lady who was much more than a lady who would not get off a bus.

Read it for many surprises.

Reading The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks: Young Readers Edition by Jeanne Theoharis was a bit of a rollercoaster. At the beginning, I read slowly – just a chapter or two a night – as the hard realities that Rosa and other Black people faced weighed heavy in my mind. As the narrative progressed, I increased my reading as I was fascinated by Rosa and her fight against segregation and racism. Toward the end, my pace slowed again and I felt a bit more disconnected from the story than I previously had.

Growing up, I learned a whitewashed version of history and knew very little about Rosa Parks other than her refusal to give up her seat on the bus. After reading The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks, I have a much greater admiration and appreciation for this remarkable woman. Her strength, her demeanor, her love of reading, her spiritual life, her pursuit of justice and equality. All of it inspired me. I’d love to read Mrs. Parks’ books, My Story (autobiography) and Quiet Strength. I imagine those books tell even more of her story as The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks focuses on her experiences with segregation, racism, and activism.

The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks: Young Readers Edition is marketed for 7th-9th graders/ages 12-17. However, I learned much from this book as an adult and the writing is not simplified, though I suspect some situations may be less detailed than in the original edition. I felt that Jeanne Theoharis presented the information in this book objectively, except for perhaps a few parts near the end. I recommend this book to ages 12+ and I expect that we will use it as a resource in our homeschool program once my daughters reach middle school. Excellent book.

My 10 yr old has been interested in Rosa Parks since she first learned about her in first grade. For kids who have an early interest in social justice, this book can be read earlier than Grade 6, especially with a little background knowledge and support (like a book club). My 10 yr old and I found it interesting that the advertising copy for the book bills it as a "set the story straight" biographical narrative to correct the idea that Rosa Parks accidentally happened into her refusal to give up her seat on the bus. My 10 yr old read this blurb and asked, "Who thinks that's how it happened?" So hallelujah, there is a generation of kids coming up who already know the Civil Rights era far better and more deeply than their white parents learned at their age (indeed, as a kid, I did learn that old narrative about Rosa Parks happening into her act of defiance). But my 10 yr old was VERY interested in what happened to Rosa Parks and her family after she gave up her bus seat. My 10 yr old reads a LOT of biographies, and the picture book biographies published in the last few years about Rosa Parks (Meltzer's Ordinary People, the LIttle People, Big Dreams, etc.) all include accurate information about Rosa Parks leading UP to her giving up her seat on the bus, but the stories mostly stop there. So my 10 yr old was very interested to skim and get to the section of the book about what happened afterwards. She read it on her own but would nightly tell me what she had learned and ask a lot of questions about how it fit in with what else was happening in history at the time. Definitely meant to be talked about while reading. This is a great book for any middle schooler or upper elementary student. It would make a great book club selection for young readers.

I actually got this for my granddaughter but my grandson began reading it and liked it so much that he wanted to read it to the family. He is right in the recommended age range so it is perfect for middle schoolers and up. It is packed with information but presented in a way that is extremely interesting and easy to understand for this age group. Overall, and excellent read and recommended.

This book is an absolute must read for all and how exciting that it is now YA accessible. Mrs. Rosa Parks was a fierce organizer and life-long social justice warrior. It is unfortunate that her multifaceted activism is often erased and we are only taught a single act of Mrs. Parks--and even that single act is taught without the proper nuance. The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks opened my eyes to the many campaigns and struggles Mrs. Parks engaged in--from the south to the north--and well into the later years of her life. I absolutely will be purchasing this work for my young nieces.
