Grow Purple Coneflower from fresh Echinacea purpurea wildflower seeds. Purple Coneflower will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, ladybugs & hummingbirds. These beautiful, heirloom flowers have been used in flower gardens & borders for decades. The plants themselves will grow to a mature height of around 24 to 36 inches tall, producing spiny, cone like centers, surrounded by gorgeous pale purple petals.

Grown as a perennial flowering plant, the Purple Coneflower will establish a deep root system in the first year of growth. After the temperature drops with the first frost, the plant life above will wilt, leaving its roots to remain alive and dormant until the following growing season, when it will emerge again. Coneflowers are a perfect choice for borders and will look great along driveways, fences and next to a garage or front entrance to your home. The flowers bloom throughout the summer months and require little care.

Echinacea Purpurea is not only a beautiful wildflower for your flower garden & borders, it is also a very versatile herb as well. Echinacea has been used for centuries, categorized as a cure all to the common cold, toothaches, burns & external sores, sore throat, psoriasis, rheumatism, stomach cramps and to counter the effects of poison ivy & snakebite. Other uses for this herb include the curing of scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. Purple Coneflower is also known to improve, or boost the immune system, as well as reduce inflammation & swelling and have hormonal, antiviral & antioxidant effects.

Save The Honey Bees

Did you know that if honey bees cease to exist, that life would also cease to exist as well. Because honey bees are responsible for the pollination 1/3 of the worlds crops, if they suddenly disappeared, so would 1/3 of our food source. The Purple Coneflower is known to attract an array of beneficial insects, so it is a perfect candidate for attracting honey bees and other bumblebees to the garden. The honey bee population has been on the decline for a few years now, but we can always help by planting flowers, such as the coneflower to assist them.

sowing the seed

growing conditions

germination and growth

Sowing The Seed

Purple Coneflower can be established indoors, or directly outdoors as well. If sown indoors, we recommend using peat pots to prevent root shock later on. Begin by sowing the seeds at a shallow depth of 1/8" under topsoil. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Because the recommended sowing depth is shallow, it may be best to start outdoors on a calm day.

Growing Conditions

Purple Coneflowers will enjoy an area of full sunlight to light shade & prefer a temperature of at least 70F to 75F. It's not too picky on soil and can tolerate short droughts as well, just make sure that the soil is well drained and not too soggy. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

Your seeds will begin to germinate within 7 to 21 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of around 24 to 36 inches tall and can spread a good 18 to 24 inches wide. The seeds can be be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Purple Coneflower produces beautiful, pale purple flowers throughout the summer months, attracting an array of beneficial insects to the garden.

These seeds are great I’m having good seed production. The packaging is so pretty with a watercolor of the flower on the front , back has clear instructions on how to germinate and grow the flower. I purchased the borage and coneflower seeds. I have bees and both of these are supposed to be great for bees. Over very happy with my purchase. This company seems great with their dedication to their seeds and sponsoring children. I’m going to order again

I bought these seeds to grow and give away as a mother's day gift at my store to try to promote native planting. Due to the weather going from hot to cold, none had grown (it does look like one had sprouted though). That doesn't mean anything though. Seed Needs was quick with delivery, a reasonable price, and even sent a coupon for next time! I would definitely buy from them again as their product is superb (the weather is not)!

It would have been a great value. But none of my seeds has popped...I've never had this issue before..Echinacea is so easy to grow...I don't know what is wrong and I've tried 3 separate ways...in pots..directly in the ground and I've tried sprouting .. Nothing.

We ordered 4 types of seeds from Seed Needs U.S.A. (chamomile, cornflower, rosemary and savory) and were impressed by the speedy delivery. We also ordered some other seeds from other sellers and have yet to receive any of those (they anticipate an August delivery). The purpose is, of course, to be able to use them in a timely manner and only the seeds we got from Seed Needs U.S.A. can be used this year. We just started germinating them, but they seem healthy and robust so we are looking forward to seeing the sprouts.

Finally, according to the seller, they are donating part of their profits to help kids in need, which makes spending money on their products even more satisfying.

I am extremely pleased with my 2 separate seeds orders, placed with Seed Needs. Unlike ALL other reviews I read of other distributors, I received exactly what I ordered and with no complications. I had the option of ordering individual types, instead of groups, which most said did not contain what they thought. Packets were sealed. Shipment was very timely. Seed Needs will be my go-to for all future seed needs - please pardon the pun.

My seeds orders: St. Johns Wort Herb (Hypericum perforatum), German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Common Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), Wormwood Seed Duo (2 Individual Seed Packets) and Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea).

Signed,
Very Satisfied

I decided to save these for next spring. It was a little late in the season to plant them now. I'm looking forward to adding them to my butterfly garden.
