The stars of Stock Aitken Waterman: Where are they now?

Pete Waterman, of legendary songwriting and record producing trio Stock Aitken Waterman, came into Sara Cox's Sounds of the 80s show for a brilliant chat, which you can watch now on BBC iPlayer. Joined by his former signing Sonia, he marveled at just how much longevity SAW's 1980s artists have had.

"We never dreamt it, everybody thought that what we were doing was candyfloss," he said. "They didn’t realise that we’d have the reverence for this stuff 30 years later... it's a testament to how good they actually were."

The show got us wondering where all the fantastic former stars of SAW are now. Read on to find out what all these 1980s legends are doing today...

1. Bananarama

Bananarama are back! But will there be new music for their upcoming tour?

Sara, Siobhan and Keren give Chris the lowdown on their big comeback.

Bananarama, the most successful girl group of all time, could not have asked for a better 2017.

Sara, Siobhan and Keren had huge hits in the 1980s with songs like Cruel Summer, Robert De Niro's Waiting... and Love in the First Degree, but Siobhan walked away in 1988.

She rejoined this year as the girls staged a fantastically successful comeback, going out on a critically acclaimed original line-up tour.

2. Rick Astley

Rick Astley - Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park 2017 Highlights

Enjoy hit after hit from the comeback king

Pete spotted Rick Astley when he was performing as a drummer with soul band FBI, and persuaded him to come and work in the PWL studios (Pete Waterman Limited) - supposedly starting off as a tea boy.

By the time of his 'retirement' in 1993, at the age of just 27, the star had sold about 40 million records.

Rick made a comeback in 2007 when his song Never Gonna Give You Up became integral to an internet meme called 'rickrolling.' Last year his album 50 hit the UK album charts at No.1, and he has had a fantastic year of touring in 2017. In 2017 he performed as part of Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park.

3. Kylie Minogue

Pete Waterman talks Kylie with Steve Wright

Pete talks about Kylie's early career on PWL Records, plus trains and pop music today.

The trio started recording with Kylie Minogue when she was still filming Neighbours (with her on-and-off screen love interest and fellow PWL stablemate Jason Donovan). SAW famously forgot that she was due to travel to England and work with them, and ended up finishing off I Should Be So Lucky while she waited outside the studio.

During her days with SAW, Kylie's first 13 singles reached the UK top ten - and I Should Be So Lucky spent five weeks at the top spot.

Of all the acts to spring from the label, Princess of Pop Kylie has definitely had the most enduring success - and she's all set to release her 14th album in 2018. In an interview with The Sun, she called it: "super positive and inspiring." We can't wait!

4. Jason Donovan

Pete On Kylie & Jason Duet

Pete tells the story behind Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan's hit "Especially For You".

Jason's debut album Ten Good Reasons was one of the biggest albums of 1989. He had four UK No. 1 singles, one of which was the famous duet Especially For You with Kylie.

Since his time as one of SAW's biggest pop protegees he has starred in various stage musicals, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, as well as appearing on I'm A Celebrity... and Strictly Come Dancing.

While there's no sign of any new music from Jason right this minute, we're very excited for his brilliantly titled 2018 tour: Jason Donovan and His Amazing Midlife Crisis.

5. Sinitta

The PWL hit factory worked with Sinitta on her 1987 self-titled debut album. The 1980s superstar and So Macho singer has been very busy in the last year or so, and recently appeared looking for love on the TV show First Dates.

She has a revealing autobiography AND a new album planned for 2018, so watch out for a lot more Sinitta news next year.

6. Sonia

Sonia talks about an early career performance

Pete and Sonia reveal the fun behind the scenes of their first Hit Man tour together.

Sonia famously got the attention of Pete by hanging outside his recording studio in Liverpool and badgering him to listen to her sing - he called her bluff and got her to do it live on air!

Her debut single with SAW, You'll Never Stop Me Loving You, hit No.1 on the UK charts in 1989 when Sonia was just 18.

While Sonia isn't a chart regular like Kylie, she's still singing regularly and loving life.

"I still sing to this day, nearly every weekend I'm somewhere," she told Sara. "A couple of weeks ago I was in South Africa doing some shows. So I'm still gigging all around, doing all the festivals, and I feel really lucky to be able to still do that."
