Nashe's early-1590s work The Choice of Valentines mentions a dildo made from glass. Dildos also appeared in 17th and 18th century Japan, in shunga. In these erotic novels, women are shown enthusiastically buying dildos, some made out of water buffalo horns.
The 1847 Queen Isabelle Olisbos is made of a solid gold shaft with a crystal head. Presented in a mahogany box lined with episcopal blue velvet, it was used ceremoniously on Friday afternoons between the times of 2 and 4 in the afternoon.
