One of the more popular and desirable of the ornamental bamboos.
2-3 yr old plant with multiple first year canes 18"-3 ft tall and some taller 2-3 yr. canes . Taller canes will be trimmed short enough to be shipped and removed from the big pots which are too heavy to ship. They have been potted for 2-3 years,I have restricted top growth by keeping them in the shade and the rhizomes are eager to expand. I took them off the market for a year because they were so labor intensive to pack and ship. Now they have increased in root mass and made new canes.
I am now offering them again at a price that compensates me for the labor involved and the increased rhizome volume.
** Please understand that i ship live plants in damp packaging, i am experienced in doing it having learned from expert bamboo growers, i know that they survive shipping, and i supply instructions and answer questions. beyond that, i cannot be responsible for plants not under my care, and i do not offer replacements or returns .**
This beautiful bamboo plant is known for its unusual black culm color which fully develops after 1-2 years.
Please look at picture "how bamboo grows"
Pots will be removed for shipping and plants packaged in damp growing medium and newspaper with stretch wrap to compress size. They don't mind at all.
There is a picture of this process.
The plant (Hale variety) is hardy to 0* F in zones 6 to 11 + and can be mulched deep north of zone 11 to keep it from a killing freeze. They grow up to 30 feet and make a wonderful decorative barrier or windbreak. The base of the canes can reach 2+ inches in dia. Harvested they can be treated like wood. You can make fence, gates, furniture, flutes, screens, poles or pot for outdoor or indoor use. If you have an erosion problem on your land, bamboo might be a solution, plus you can harvest the grown canes for craft/construction use.
Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra).'Hale' var.
Some clones of Black Bamboo have better black color than others. The "Hale" clone is highly valued for the consistency of its coloration, its smaller size, and its cold hardiness.
Size: Hale variations can grow to 20 feet and is a smaller, more cold tolerant variant of the principal form. Typical size in the Southeast is 15-20 feet with 1-inch diameter culms. One of the least aggressive running bamboos. Culms will usually get about 1.5 inches in diameter and are strikingly attractive.
Description: A medium-sized bamboo with segmented culms that are green at first, and then turn black by the end of the first summer. The foliage of Black Bamboo is not nearly as dense as that of other bamboos in the genus Phyllostachys.
Fairly common throughout the Southeast, though usually somewhat expensive.
Culture: Plant in light to medium shade in a well-drained soil. Will grow in full sun with irrigation and good care. Grows slowly in deep shade.
Shipped with damp newspaper and damp peat moss. The pot removed for shipping. They are so vigorous sometimes they grow in the package.
Please plant the new bamboo as soon as possible. If you cannot plant the bamboo within a day or two, just open the wrapping on the top of each plant. Add 1 cup of water every two days until you can plant them. Provide plenty of light, but keep out of the direct sun so the root ball will not dry out completely until planted.
Handle your bamboo by the root ball only. Remove all packing material (tape and Paper) from around the plant, being careful not to damage the root ball or any new shoots.) If new shoots, limbs or foliage is broken, the bamboo will replace these..
Water the soil with a watering can. The soil should be deeply moist, but there should not be any muddy water on the surface. Stick your finger into the soil down to the second knuckle to make sure that the soil is damp.
Check the moistness of your soil every other day with your finger. If it feels dry, water the rhizome until the soil is damp, but not drenched.
Too much water will cause the rhizomes to rot. Do not overwater the soil.
Create temporary shade till established
If in containers,Keep the pots in the shade for 4-6 weeks or create temporary shade where planted. Keep it out of direct sunlight. The best place to keep it is next to a shady exterior wall or under the cover of a large tree or create some shade with a cardboard box or a shade canopy. Bamboo buds shoot in the Spring. It may take up to 4 to 6 weeks before your bamboo sprouts and grows through the soil again.
dig a hole twice the size of the roots.
put in some compost.mix with soil, and the peat that they are shipped with.
no chemical fertilizer, organic only.
plant in the hole and fill with soil/compost mix.
water well keep moist but NOT Soggy. Provide good drainage
provide temporary shade for several weeks after planting.
