McDowell's Lauren Fadden returns a shot as she and teammate Elise Heinlein compete against Fairview's Amy Matczak and Stephanie Ace during their District 10 Class AAA girls doubles tennis final at Pennbriar Athletic Club in Summit Township on Oct. 15. ANDY COLWELL/

Lauren Fadden is a Fort LeBoeuf student who plays tennis for McDowell through the schools' co-op program.

Fadden reached the final in last season's District 10 Class AAA singles tournament as a freshman. Despite that, she said many of her Waterford teachers still aren't aware she competes in that sport.

"I still have to tell them why I wasn't in class for a couple days," Fadden said. "I hope this will help get the point across."

Fadden meant winning Wednesday's D-10 Class AAA doubles tournament with McDowell junior Elise Heinlein.

The second-seeded duo upset Fairview's Amy Matczak and Stephanie Ace, the tournament favorites, 6-4, 7-5 in the championship match at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

The duo advanced to the PIAA doubles tournament the weekend of Oct. 31 at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Mercyhurst Prep's Lauren Petrella and Caitlyn Schultz also advanced to the PIAA tournament as they won Wednesday's all-Laker Class AA final, with a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Taylor Levinson and Nicole Freeman.

Mercyhurst's quartet began their match as Fadden and Heinlein received awards and applause for capturing the meet's large-school title.

Fadden was victorious even though she was still feeling the effects of a severe sprain in her left knee during McDowell's regular-season finale last week against Central Tech.

She suffered no structural damage, but withdrew from singles play as a precaution.

"It feels better than it did Saturday," Fadden said of her knee, "but I feel like I'm going to feel (sore today), for sure. I didn't try to compensate for it that much. I probably did give up on a few balls I could have reached (before the injury), but I still felt like I moved around well."

Hitting out when not on the run didn't appear to be an issue for Fadden. She rifled baseline shots throughout the final, which hinged on a sequence late in the second set.

Fadden and Heinlein saved two set points with Heinlein serving at 4-5. They eventually held and then broke Matczak's ensuing serve when Ace was wide with her cross-court backhand.

"That felt really good," Heinlein said of her service hold. "I kept telling myself to get the ball in play and not focus on anything else."

Petrella and Schultz had an easier time.

Wednesday's title run also meant Petrella has finished first in D-10's singles, doubles and team events.

It wasn't a distinction Petrella initially wanted.

The senior sought to repeat in Class AA singles, but was upset by Grove City freshman Emily Gordon in Monday's final.

"I had a goal coming into singles, and that didn't work out," Petrella said. "But I see things as happening for a reason, and I was grateful for the opportunity to play with Caitlyn. After losing (Monday), I just wanted to be there to do whatever (coach Kelly Maslar) thought was best for our team."

Petrella and Schultz will open Class AA state play vs. Kara Chyung and Lena Deb. The Moravian Academy duo won the District 11 tournament.

Fadden and Heinlein will draw the Class AAA second seed from District 3.They must wait until Saturday to learn of their opponents.

D-10 play concludes with today's 1 p.m. team finals at Pennbriar. Mercyhurst Prep meets Hickory in the Class AA, as does Fairview and Warren in Class AAA.
