The problem wasn't the story really.
It was a bit ham-fisted about war being hell.
And over double underlining the stupidity of the french
generals.
Kind of ends on a non ending

Danger, close-calls, pranks, friendship and real history

I read this book aloud together with my 15 year old, who has been generally bored with every other book I've tried lately. We both loved this book. It was an interesting story with both danger, close-calls, pranks and friendship. It also gave us some insight into World War I - both through the story (with Indy interacting with real generals from history) and through the "historical note" chapter at the end of the book. The book is based on the tv episode "Verdun, September 1916."

Here's the description from the back of the book:

"Young Indiana Jones will do anything to be where the action is!

"A new name, a new birth date, a new identity to get him to France and right into the thick of World War I.

"As Corporal Henri Defense, a Belgian courier, Indy carries messages between two different wars: the safe war at staff headquarters, where generals plan battles on maps. And the real war in the trenches of Verdun, where soldiers die in appalling numbers.

"Indy is horrified by what he sees. And he's desperate when he learns his wounded buddy, Remy, is being sent back to the trenches. How can he save Remy from certain death?"

***

And here's the description from the inside cover:

"What is Indiana Jones doing in Verdun in September 1916?

"Indy's pal Remy enlists in the Belgian army to fight the Germans and is sent to France. Indy goes with him... And not just for the ride!

Come along with Indy to the battlegrounds of World War I, where his courage and daring are tested as never before! Meet the famous generals who call the shots. And the ordinary soldiers who fire them."

Dismal tale of life in the WW I trenches as seen by a young Indiana Jones. If the story does its part to get the message across that "War is Hell" then it's worth the reading time. Personally I like lighter fare and found the other installments in this series more appealing.

This is well researched, fact based fiction and the reading list provided at the end make it a good educational choice.
