Born March 15, 1943 Leuven, Jean-Paul Van den Broeck establish his career mainly in Flanders until his cover of "Sammy" in 1994.

Like many of his future colleagues, he attended evening classes in advertising and decorative arts at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels. His first publication is made in 1962 in the monthly Saturday-YOUTH with "Calypso leads the dance," a short story full of little pirate.

He then entered as an apprentice to the agency Real-Press letter where he goes and foreign series and various photo-novels. Meanwhile, he produced illustrations for religious periodicals for youth (and Others HELLO, SPRINGBOARD) and cartoons for Flemish political parties antagonists under different pseudonyms.

After several short complete stories from scenarios Acar Jacques for weekly Tintin (1964) and PILOT (1965), he became assistant Hurey (Hugo Reymaeker) and using for the decorations of some stories in TINTIN / Kuifje . Commissioned an advertising agency, from 1966, strips man of promotional booklets for various Bibendum Michelin, mainly for South Africa.

His real debut full copyright date from this period with "Bertje Kluizenaar" in the weekly WORDING and "The Mystery of Mornetour" for everyday SOUTHWEST.

In 1967, all doors seem to open before him. It takes the characters to gags Marc Sleen in PATS: "From Lustige Kapoentjes" (aka "The Merry Fellows") and "Piet Fluwijn Bolleke &" ("Celestin Radish"). It also creates for the agency I.F.S. the daily series "Dual Tone" Happy extraterrestrial published across Europe. And Abbey began to ask him for Averbode regular comic series for its publications Flemish: "Jip" (1967), "Pickelby" (1969), "Willie Wervelwind" (1969), "Dick & Doortje" (1979) and especially the series "Annie Peter", including an important series of albums released in Standaard Uitgeverij Antwerp from 1981 (six volumes of "Anne and Peter" will be offered in France by Fleurus).

In 1969, it has PATS "Oskar, of ontdekkingsreiziger", a personal favorite of his characters, but the gags of this explorer will be short term. The following year, he teamed with writer Daniel Jansens to develop the gags and stories to follow, "van de Bakker Kramikske" in DE VOLKSMACHT. This young apprentice baker know too many albums on the presses of the daily Het Volk, who continue to publish these adventures much appreciated in Flanders and in the middle of the mill.

His "Lutti-Kids" bring a little cheer to ZIE-MAGAZINE en1979, but overworked, he is forced to devote himself primarily to "Kramikske" and "Annie Peter" until the early 90s.

He then illustrates a collection of comic books commercials for children's clothing with the character of "Nikkel" and hit the jackpot by agreeing to animate on paper two of the most famous Flemish television. It turns into comic book hero dog mascot and host of comedy shows "Samson", very popular in the BRT (Belgian Flemish Television, now VRT). For this series, he produced four albums a year since 1993 with increasing success in Flanders and Holland.

With Berck, its almost neighbor is one of the best representatives of the Flemish school Leuven, well-rounded, in fast-paced action and friendly humor aimed primarily young audiences. Curiously, they never work together, although the interference is strong enough in their styles and accentuated by the fact that the last twenty years, apprentices started in comics by Jean-Pol were often taken thereafter as assistants Berck for its various series.

It was therefore a logical things that Jean-Pol accepts the succession of Berck in 1994 for "Sammy", after the retirement of it: no better than he could not assure the recovery and continuation characters gleefully imagined by Cauvin to revive the America of the 20s ...
