Privet is the number one hedging plant. However, its foliage and overall appearance have made many nurseries grow it as a standard plant on stems, be it short or long. Very popular are also trimmed plants shaped into balls, pyramids or any other desired shape.

It has rich green, ovate leaves, 3-4 cm long. They are semi-deciduous: in our climate they usually persist until December, then they dry out and fall down. Flowers are composed in 7-10 cm long erect panicles in early summer. They are followed by purple-black berries favourite with birds in autumn.

Pruning or trimming of any kind is possible. You can prune it hard down to 5-year old wood. Such action should be followed by regular fertilizing to enforce new growths. Grow it in full sun or part shade, it can also withstand shaded areas if the shade is not too dark. The soil has to be medium fertile, well-drained. Hardy to about -25°C (USDA zone 6).
