Beech is a reliable and hardy tree of our climate. On the market today there are many wild forms and hybridized varieties as well as selections that can satisfy the taste of almost everyone. They can offer various colours of foliage, and sizes from dwarf to extra large.

Purpurea Pendula is a perfect example of a beautiful garden-origin eech. It is a slow growing small tree with a mushroom head of pendent branches, usually grafted from 1.5 to 2m tall. The deciduous leaves are rich purple-black (if grown in full sun) that create a fascinating waterfall of striking colour. In autumn the leaves turn coppery orange and honey yellow with conspicuous red veins. Though being a slow grower its pendent branches grow a little faster than branches of common beech. That is why bigger specimens get more expensive.

It can be clipped or pruned in late winter. Being a grafted small tree it never grows much taller than its grafting point so can fit even a small garden. It will grow in almost any soil type including chalky. For best results in leaf colour plant it in full sun. Fully hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4).
