Rough-leaved hydrangea is a less common type from the group. It is an upright shrub, originated in eastern Asia. Large, up to 25 cm long, suede-like, dark green leaves are covered with tiny hairs. Inflorescence are formed in large, flattened corymbs of tiny, violet-pink to purple-mauve fertile flowers in the centre, surrounded by white, sometimes pink- to mauve-tinged sterile flowers. They come out in mid to late summer and last for a long time.

You can tell by the name that it needs a lot of water, therefore we suggest planting it is semi-shade. It will like full sun only with regular watering on sunny, hot days. It prefers acidic soil, neutral is fine but it will not do well in limy soil. If new branches are too thin and unsightly it can be pruned to a required shape in the spring. Fully hardy to approx. -29°C (USDA zone 5).
