Rode Boskoop (Boskoop Red) is a red version of an old and popular Dutch variety of Belle de Boskoop late apple. It produces incredibly large fruit that can weigh up to 250g. It is often irregular or rounded with ribs. The skin is tough, rich red on most parts, and the flesh is pale yellow-green maturing to more yellow. The taste is very strong and tart with a great aroma for which Boskoop Red is a sought after apple variety – its taste does not change or fade away after processing or drying. It is less juicy. Among currently cultivated apple varieties this one has the highest contents of vitamin C. Harvesting time is late October and the fruit matures in early to mid December. It stores well until April provided slightly higher air humidity to prevent the skin from shriveling.

Boskoop Red apple tree grows moderately and comes to fertility late. It is best cultivated without pruning or training. Being self-sterile it needs another pollinator for heavy crop, such as Granny Smith, Idared, James Grieve + Red, Jonathan, Melrose, Opal, Polka or Rubinola. Hardy to min. -26°C (USDA zone 6), and not suitable for colder regions.
