Quite exotic appearance is what this perennial brings to your garden with its late summer flowering. It comes from Taiwan and is hardy in our climate, too. In Czech we call it a snake lily, in English it is called toad lily - quite weird, don't you think? It is also a magnet for photographers because to photograph its very particular flowers is a real challenge.
Toad lily is a rhizomatous plant with orchid-like leaves and unusual star-shaped flowers with 6 heavily spotted petals and stigmas. PINK FRECKLES® is a compact variety producing light lilac pink to pale violet flowers with deep maroon or violet freckles. It blooms profusely on short stems owing to which the plant remains compact also at its peak flowering phase. The clump is compact and dense with fresh green, broadly lance-shaped leaves. It is often accompanied with anemones, leucothoes, azaleas, or mountain laurels.
Grow it in semi-shaded but warm position in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Mulch is recommended all year round to prevent the plant from drying out, and as a protection in snow-less winters. It emerges in late spring so we suggest marking the planting spot so that you remember there is something yet to come out, especially in time when all other perennials have showed new growths. Fully hardy to min. -28°C (USDA zone 8).
