Raywood is a very elegant variety of a deciduous tree called Claret ash. Its leaves are pinnate, up to 25 cm long and are composed of narrow, elliptic and very glossy individual leaflets that are deep green in summer and turn breathtaking shades of brilliant carmine red and deep burgundy red in the autumn. It needs a hot summer and long enough autumn to perform the best colour shades. If the season is not too good the leaves turn golden yellow with some red overlay.

Claret ash grows fast and upright, making an almost oval, narrow crown when you, spreading with age. To achieve a denser crown it can be pruned when you (at the end of winter). This variety does not make fertile seeds therefore it is not invasive.

Ash can take almost any soil type, it can withstand both drought and temporary water-logging when established but do not plant new trees in boggy soil. Grow in full sun and acidic soil (add peat) for best autumn colours. Fully hardy to min. -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
