Athyrium niponicum 'Metallica' -
Japanese Painted Fern is one of the most popular ferns grown today. Given sufficient moisture, especially through the hotter drier months, it gives outstanding presence to a shady border. The leaves appear 'painted' indeed and must be amongst the most colourful of all cultivated ferns being silvery grey-green with variable burgundy staining towards the centre and even more pronounced burgundy midribs. 
It is an elegant, deciduous fern with deeply cut,silvery grey-green fronds. It’s perfect for growing in a woodland border or beneath the shade of a tree, and works well when grown alongside other woodland plants. 

Grow Athyrium niponicum var. pictum in moist, fertile, neutral to acid soil. Add well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost when planting, and mulch annually with the same. In colder regions the crown may need protection from frost
