Get ready for Valentine’s Day! During an at-home version of the Massillon Museum’s next “Do the Mu!” workshop, participants of all ages will learn how to create iris paper folded hearts. The virtual demonstration by artist Michele Waalkes will be posted on facebook.com/MassillonMuseum, youtube.com/user/MassillonMuseum/videos, and the MassMu website at noon on Saturday, Feb. 6.

HIGHLIGHTS

The dimensional hearts are simple to create with scissors, a ruler, a pencil, masking tape, colored or printed paper, and one sheet of heavy paper. The pattern can be printed from MassillonMuseum.org/Do-the-Mu or picked up at the Museum’s reception desk. Hearts can be made into a card or framed.

Choose three different colors of paper for contrast or all the same color for a monochromatic heart. Any type of paper can be used—construction or copy papers, scrapbook papers or old book pages, even paper grocery bags.

Waalkes says:  “I am a firm believer in the value of art! To that end, I have curated numerous exhibits, used art to teach core standards in classrooms from preschool through twelfth grade, taught art classes to college students, created public artwork that engages the community, and produced my own mixed media artwork that conveys a variety of themes. My work as a curator, artist, and educator has always intersected with the community, whether to inspire, to spark dialogue, to express concepts, to wrestle with difficult issues, or to bring people together. This is what makes the arts so meaningful to me. I am extremely privileged to share in this amazing power of art through my different roles.” To see examples of her work, visit www.michelewaalkes.com.
