I have two very grateful in-laws after a few weeks ago whilst visiting them I spotted what I believed to be a single stand of Japanese knotweed from their balcony. My suspicion has since been confirmed by external contractors who are addressing it urgently! 👀 I have been told that JK is often found near power sub stations like in this case, which could be due to imported soil when they are built. Always be on the lookout! 🧐

Hiya love. Mega good share - I’m having an INNS weekend too with a parakeet scaring the life out of me 🤣 in the apple tree. Honestly thought my daughters or husband were planking me! At first. I unwittingly once bought a property with JK in my garden. Viewed in October. Had been cut and something placed on top. Didn’t bother with anything (legal-could have kicked off) but controlling it and cut the spread. Is easy on a small scale. If large enough, cut (put cuttings in a bag and spray with tree root killer) the stems. With the remaining part of stem (keep 6” above ground), drive screw driver into the stem and then use a slip-tip syringe to slowly drip tree root killer into the driven hole. If it is not that large, ‘paint’ the leaves. Do this in May and again in august each year. Job done. It might take 7yrs or more but it wil be targeted and do the job. Wear gloves, mask and eye goggles to protect yourself. And save yourself a fortune in contractor fees. Taught by the lovely gardeners at Beechgrove Garden and specialists I’ve worked with over the years. And if you think it came from next door (the sub-station) you could always ask them to take this on in the long term- your in laws will likely take better care of the hedge ❤️
