Navigating the Path to Becoming an Architect: A Guide for High School Students

Are you a high school student with a passion for design, a keen eye for detail, and a fascination with how buildings work? If so, you might want to consider architecture as a possible career path. Becoming an architect is an exciting journey that combines creativity, technical skills, and a deep understanding of how people interact with the world around us.

At X Architecture, we are constantly looking to build, mentor and encourage the next generation of talented individuals. In this article, we hope to provide you with some of the insights and guidance on pursuing a career in design and architecture!

What is an architect?

Before diving in, it's essential to have a clear understanding of what architects actually do.

In simple terms, architects are responsible for designing and planning buildings and spaces that are not only well composed, aesthetically pleasing and beautiful, but also practical, safe and sustainable.

We work on a wide range of projects, from residential homes and apartments, to skyscrapers and museums, including some landscape and urban design. Our role often requires us to also work closely with a lot of different people, including clients, consultants, engineers and construction teams to ensure that we bring designs to life in a safe and efficient way.

Our core skill lies in our ability to design. Design is the ability to solve problems - for architects, our design is to solve spatial problems in a complex, three-dimensional world, for people. Design is a wonderful skill to cultivate, and does not only help make better architects, but can influence other professions and skills such as drawings, composition, graphic arts, painting, sculpting and photography to name a few.

So, how do you begin to harness your untapped potential to become the next Starchitect? We’ve put together a list of ideas to help foster your inner architect:

Develop Your Creative Skills

Architecture is a highly creative field. As a student, you have the opportunity to focus on honing your creative skills. This can be through sketching, drawing and painting to develop your visual thinking abilities, but may include a range of different mediums and techniques, including digital painting, photography, sculpting and even 3D printing. Be bold. Be Expressive.

Another great idea is to explore your city: visit architectural landmarks, museums, and exhibitions to gain inspiration and a deeper appreciation for design. This exploration doesn’t have to be limited to architecture; explore furniture design, industrial design, fashion and photography.

Proficiency in Math and Science

While creativity is crucial, architecture also requires a strong foundation in math and science. High school courses in mathematics and physics will help you grasp the key principles and forces that underpin architectural concepts. Geometry, in particular, plays a significant role in architectural design, so pay close attention.

Take Relevant Courses

If your school offers courses related to architecture or design, take advantage of them. This might include studies in art, drafting, design, and computer-aided design (CAD), which can provide you with valuable skills and insights. These courses will introduce you to the tools and techniques used by architects in the design process.

Build a Strong Portfolio

As you progress through high school, consciously start building a portfolio that showcases your creative work. This can include drawings, sketches, paintings, models or any design-related projects you've worked on. A creative, well-organized and diverse portfolio will be a valuable asset when applying to architecture schools (and even intern positions over the summer!)

Research Architecture Schools

Once you’ve made the decision that being an architect is the right choice for you, start compiling a list of architecture schools that align with your interests and goals. Try to identify programs accredited by organizations like the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in the USA and the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) in Canada. Consider factors such as location, faculty expertise, facilities, and available resources.

Where possible, try to visit the campuses to get a feel for the environment and culture of each school. A school might be prestigious on paper, but if it doesn’t align with your interests, it may take away your passion over time.

Pursue Higher Education

Becoming an architect is not easy. To become a licensed architect, you'll need to earn a professional degree in architecture, typically a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or a Master of Architecture (M.Arch). Plan your academic path accordingly, and be prepared for several years of rigorous coursework and design studio projects. There will be many late nights in your future, but the end goal is worth it!

Gain Practical Experience

Architecture is a profession that values hands-on experience. Explore summer internships or part-time jobs with local architectural firms during your undergraduate or graduate studies. This practical experience will expose you to real-world projects and help you build valuable connections in the industry.

Professional Registration

After completing your education, you'll need to gain professional experience and pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) in the USA, or the Exam for Architects in Canada (ExAC) to become a licensed architect. Licensing requirements vary by state/province, so research the specific requirements in your desired location.

Conclusion

Becoming an architect is a rewarding journey that literally allows you to shape the world around you through creativity and design. If you have a passion for design, start by developing your creative and technical skills, exploring educational opportunities, and gaining practical experience.

With dedication and a strong foundation, you can embark on a fulfilling career as an architect and contribute to the creation of inspiring and functional spaces for people to enjoy.

We look forward to working with you in the not so distant future.
