Hurricane Idalia victims still need help

Miami's Catholic Charities continues to provide relief to those affected

MIAMI | A month after Hurricane Idalia plowed into northern Florida as a strong Category 3 storm, recovery efforts continue, and those affected continue to need help – even though they garner few headlines.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami has been directly involved with Idalia recovery efforts since the storm’s passage, Aug. 31, 2023.

“Our hurricane relief efforts resulted in 21 FEMA-supplied temporary housing units being delivered to displaced farmworkers in the town of Mayo,” said Peter Routsis-Arroyo, Catholic Charities’ CEO. “These trailers provided immediate shelter to those who lost their homes following the storm.”

In addition, $5,000 worth of gift cards were provided to farmworker families for the purchase of food, hygiene products and the replacement of lost clothing.

A laundry trailer provided with the help of Catholic Charities USA also was installed to serve the coastal community of Horseshoe Beach and continues to be operated by Catholic Charities Miami.

“Over 60 homes in this small community were destroyed by the storm,” Routsis-Arroyo said. “Our work is ongoing, and your support is needed to help us continue these relief efforts in the communities still reeling from the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.”

Donations can be made through Catholic Charities' website: ccadm.org.
