Description

(Sandan Zaki)

Also known (incorrectly) as ‘amurensis plena‘ this is a lovely form the Japanese name of which translates as “triple bloomer”, or ” three-phase”, in allusion to the three zones in the flower which are alternately dark golden yellow, green and then yellow again. In some flowers, the very innermost yellow zone may also develop as green, sometimes the revers happens and the green stays reduced while the yellow expands to take its place. These variations are just a cultural anomaly, not an unspecified virus, not a mis-identification, the plants revert again the following year however when it does happen (illustrated) it is often a spectacular appearance. All in all a tight and beautiful, fully-doubled flower of great beauty and intrigue.

The flowers are often so large that they can sometimes be weighed down by spring rains.

This clonal cultivar has no fertile parts as these have all turned into petals.
