Description

This is the so-called “Giant Helleborine”

Stems of between 20-60cm carry several 2-3cm flowers which are a palette of brown, yellow and red in a subtle combination.

Whilst this is an excellent species for the hardy orchid novice, it is also a good plant that deserves a place in every garden with a damp spot. Do not fuss it but give it a damp to moist clay or peat soil and give it some patience. It will then, after a delay of a year, start to clump up nicely.

It will take a little light shade but is best in full sun as long as the roots do not dry out. Plant about 6cm deep, or with the shoot half way out of the soil, and leave them alone to settle. Disturbance is the enemy of flowering with this plant.

Nice divisions of one of the easier ground orchids. Naturally a native of wet rides and flushes in Western USA. We have nice, flowering sized rhizomes, grown and produced here and freshly lifted for sale.
