Sow direct from autumn-early spring. Sow thinly and cover lightly with soil. Overwintering outside provides the perfect conditions for germination in spring. Or sow under cover in a cold frame, early spring. Plant out after the frosts.

Description

I’ve long-loved Briza maxima and have been on the lookout for a similarly beautiful and delicate upper-storey perennial grass. Well, here it is, a widespread garden plant in the USA but not widely grown here. We’re missing out — this is lovely cascading over a path at the front of a border, and in a vase. One of our new-found favourites at Perch Hill.

Care Tips

Germination can be sporadic, overwintering outside or in a cold frame is recommended. The fresh and dried seed stalks are wonderful in flower arrangements. Cut stems back close the ground in spring.
