(Syn Iris ensata)

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow in punnets indoors / or scatter in garden autumn or winter.

INDOORS: First rub the seeds between your hands with some sharp sand or fine sandpaper, to score the hard seed case and allow water to penetrate and initiate germination.

Then soak seeds in warm water that is hot but not burning to the touch (not boiling).

Leave the seeds to soak for 24 hours.
Seeds that sink to the bottom have absorbed water and are ready to sow.
But seeds that are floating have not yet absorbed moisture.
So re-soak in fresh warm water for a further 24 hours (they may also need a little more abrasion to break the hard seed coat).

Now sow the seed in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
And cover with grit/mix/sand/vermiculite to depth of seed diameter.

Keep the sown punnet moist at 16 to 21°C for 2-4 weeks.

Then wrap the moist, sown punnet in cling wrap & place in fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.

Now remove. unwrap punnet & place again in a well lit position at 12-21°C.

Seedlings emerge within approx. 30 days. Do not discard punnet, as some seedlings may come later.

Iris kaempferi are stunners and worth all this palaver.
