Who was Francis Bacon?
British figurative painter Francis Bacon was known throughout the art world for his sombre, morose artworks. He often painted scenes of crucifixions, portraits of popes and furies. His later work during the 1960s was dominated by portraits of his close friends, his lover George Dyer and abstracted figures. Despite the bleak existential outlook of his work, in person Bacon was a beloved socialite and bon vivant fond of drinking and gambling. Bacon maintained a diverse circle of friends in London that included the painters Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Patrick Swift and the Vogue photographer, John Deakin. Willem de Kooning once described Bacon as "the most important painter of the disquieting human figure in the 50s of the 20th century".

Bacon made more than 500 artworks over the span of his career. For a time towards the end of his life, Bacon was one of the most expensive living artists in the world. His pieces fetched millions at auction. Posthumously, his value only increased. As recently as 2014, one of Bacon’s Triptychs sold at Sotheby's for €55.465 million ($86.28 million). At the time, the sale set a record for the most expensive postwar work of art sold at auction.
Bacon’s many artworks have inspired countless later artists. His haunting figurative portraits, use of empty space and dense blocks of color are carried forward by contemporary artists for sale today.
