W. Eugene Smith, one of the most famous photographers of the 20th century, and his wife Aileen Smith spent three years photographing Minamata disease, a disease caused by pollution. Their 1975 book “Minamata” caused a huge sensation and led to Minamata disease becoming widely known throughout the world. In this exhibition, with the cooperation of the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona and the Aileen Archive, about 70 new prints of photographs from the book and unpublished photographs of daily life in the region were made under Aileen’s supervision. The exhibition will also include photographs of Eugene and Aileen at the time.
