Description

A striking, prickly, low-growing plant with its round, steel-blue flower-heads in summer. Bristly silvery bracts, longer than the actual flower, surround the flowerhead.

Dry, grassy and waste areas.

The tubular flowers turn from silvery to steel-blue.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Deeply lobed, lobes almost to central midrib, elliptical in shape, tips of lobes with spines, recurved margins.

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with prickly hairs.
